Alan Maryon-Davis FFPH FRCP HonFRCGP (elected Chair of Trustees 20/06/11)
Honorary Professor of Public Health, Kings College London
Alan has over 35 years experience in preventive medicine, health promotion and health policy at national and local level. As former head of health sciences at the Health Education Council he has been involved in many national campaigns, including infant nutrition, child accidents and passive smoking. More recently he has spearheaded local approaches to reducing health inequalities as director of public health for the multi-deprived inner-London borough of Southwark. Alan has been a member of several Department of Health taskforces and has chaired a national working group on health partnerships. He is a trustee of a number of charities, vice-chair of the National Heart Forum and immediate past-president of the UK Faculty of Public Health. A frequent writer and broadcaster on health matters, Alan has a strong interest in harnessing the power of the media, old and new, to help people achieve better health and wellbeing for themselves, their families and their communities.
Francesca Entwistle MSc by Research, PGCEA, ADM, RM, RN (elected 24/01/07)
Principal Lecturer Midwifery, University of Hertfordshire
Francesca is a midwife with 26 years experience. Her interest in breastfeeding was consolidated through her research exploring the impact of midwifery training on breastfeeding outcomes for women from low income groups. A Principal Lecturer in Midwifery at the University of Hertfordshire, Francesca was previously on secondment to the Department of Health as the Regional Infant Feeding Co-ordinator for London. Working within the Regional Public Health Group has enabled her to work collaboratively with NHS London, the Greater London Authority and non-government offices including the Royal College of Midwives, UNICEF and Best Beginnings. Francesca has been instrumental in the development and dissemination of the 'From bump to breastfeeding'DVD and posters designed to advertise its use within the NHS. Her vision, through collaborative working with NHS London, the GLA and Health Care for London is to take London forward as a ‘Breastfeeding Friendly City’ in time for the 2012 Olympics.
Andrew Moss (elected 24/01/07)
Media Lawyer
Andrew is a qualified solicitor with over 12 years experience of advising companies such as the Football Association, FremantleMedia, Red Bee Media, Celador, 2waytraffic and Sony Pictures in the sports & media sectors. World famous TV formats including X Factor, Pop Idol, Who Wants To Be A Millionaire?, Dragons' Den, Jeopardy and Wheel of Fortune have all benefited from Andrew's expertise. As well as providing general commercial and business affairs support, Andrew has expertise in the creation, acquisition, protection, distribution and licensing of intellectual property and TV formats. Most recently, Andrew acted as general counsel on the successful acquisition and integration of Celador International by 2waytraffic and 2waytraffic's subsequent disposal to Sony Pictures in 2008. Andrew trained and qualified as a litigator at Herbert Smith, an international firm of solicitors headquartered in the City of London.
Janet MF Fyle MA, RN, RM (elected 29/01/07)
Professional Adviser, Royal College of Midwives
Janet Fyle is a Masters Degree registered practising midwife and is currently the Professional Policy Advisor at the Royal College of Midwives. She has worked in the NHS with women and families over many years and at senior level. Her role involves providing midwifery policy advice to the RCM and looking at how local and national policies impact on women, their families and midwives. Janet represents the RCM on a number of external groups (statutory, voluntary and international).She also provides advice to government departments on a range of issues. She is also the RCM’s lead on inequalities in health, infant feeding and the Safeguarding of Children. Janet has three grown up children and describes herself as a British Sierra Leonean. Janet’s interests lie in the wider issues of the impact of government policies on women and their families.
David Boyd (elected 20/6/11)
Charity lawyer
David has spent more than ten years advising charities as a solicitor at a City law firm, then as a senior lawyer at the Charity Commission, and now as Head of Legal at a large educational charity. David has helped charities of all shapes and sizes through their various life cycle events, and assisted in the birth of Best Beginnings by delivering its governing documents. Before life as a charity lawyer, David got a masters degree in sustainable development and worked on environmental policy at the European Commission. But David’s real vocation is being a father to three children, which is why he is committed to the great work of Best Beginnings.
Hannah Mindel (Treasurer, elected 27/01/09)
Accountant
Hannah Mindel is a chartered accountant. She has worked with a large accountancy firm for nearly 11 years, specialising in the audit of medium to large companies. Hannah focusses on the charity's systems and reporting to improve its governance and efficiency and has actively supported the drive to build a network of corporate friends in order to help secure the charity's long-term financial health. Hannah has a young family and so has a vested interest in ensuring that all babies have access to their own best beginning.
