Small Wonders Champions
To maximise the impact of Small Wonders across the country, Best Beginnings are recruiting a team of staff within each hospital to ‘champion’ the roll-out of the DVD within their hospital. With support from BAPM we have encouraged hospitals to recruit these ‘Small Wonders Champions’ from across disciplines, including at least one Champion from Neonatal Services and one from Midwifery.
Small Wonders Champions across the four nations
To date we have over 424 Champions across the UK (click here to see which hospitals in England have Small Wonders Champions and DVDs). In England we have the best “take-up” with 163 of the 171 hospitals with a neonatal unit having at least one active Champion. In Scotland, Northern Ireland and Wales we are working closely with government and our supporters from the Royal College of Midwives and from across other disciplines to recruit further champions.
Small Wonders Champions’ role
In units with a Small Wonders Champion Best Beginnings are able to provide free DVDs for all parents who have a baby on the neonatal unit for a year, all neonatal staff and relevant midwifery staff. To ensure that Small Wonders is able to have the biggest possible impact on health outcomes, Best Beginnings are offering these DVDs to hospitals only once they have:
a. completed and returned a ‘Planning Form’ to Best Beginnings, detailing their plans for the roll-out of Small Wonders within their hospital
b. have the support of the clinical lead for Neonatal Services and Head of Midwifery to make use of the DVDs in their services
Support for Small Wonders Champions
We have created a number of resources to help support our Small Wonders Champions to embed the Small Wonders DVD in their units including posters, an outlines of a presentation, DVD monitoring sheets and FAQ sheets; these are available to download here.
Events for Small Wonders Champions
Best Beginnings hosted a series of pre launch events in England to help prepare Small Wonders Champions to roll-out Small Wonders. The events were a huge success enabling the Champions to learn more about the Small Wonders resource, consider how they may use it as a tool in the delivery of care, share learning and plans for embedding the use of the DVD and hear tips from expert speakers and learning from the Best Beginnings intensive intervention sites at Guys and St Thomas', King's College London and Liverpool Women's Hospital Trust. Similar events will be held in Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland (although the dates of these are still to be confirmed) and you can view the excellent feedback from the English events here.
Champion feedback and survey results
Best Beginnings has had some fantastic feedback from our Champions so far which you can view here, as well as some incredibly positive results from our Champion Survey which you can view here.
Best Beginnings would like to get a fuller national picture of how things are going in terms of embedding the Small Wonders DVD in neonatal units who already have the DVDs, therefore if your unit has not yet completed the survey please dowload it here. We are keen to hear all your feedback both good and bad, regardless of what stage your unit is at in terms of embedding the Small Wonders DVD.
