Premature and sick babies in the UKPremature baby

Every year 60,000 babies in the UK are born too early. That's 1 in 10 babies.

Premature means a baby is born before 37 weeks.

Premature birth is the leading cause of death in newborns and the second leading cause of death in children under five.

Supporting parents when their baby is sick or prematurepremature baby

Parents of premature babies face emotional and psychological stresses. Parents of premature babies are twice as likely to suffer from postnatal depression.

It can be very distressing to be told when you’re pregnant that your baby is likely to be born prematurely (too early). However there are lots of
things parents can do to help care for their baby and evidence shows this can make a real difference to their health and wellbeing.

Our Small Wonders DVD and Change Programme, endorsed by seven Royal Colleges and many charities, looks at all the issues surrounding neonatal care directly through the eyes and experiences of 14 families. The DVD includes how to hold and care for their premature baby, particularly during painful procedures, how to feed and dealing with bereavement.

How your donation will help premature babies

So far, over 95,000 DVDs have reached healthcare professionals and parents of premature babies. Your donation can help us ensure that even more families who find themselves involved with a neonatal unit will each continue to receive a FREE copy of the Small Wonders films on DVD.

It will also help us continue our National Change Programme with Small Wonders Champions and staff across UK hospitals - helping them help parents. Evaluation of the programme has shown that the programme has had a significant impact on the knowledge and confidence of staff and parents.

Thank you.
