UK child health inequalities

Even with our sophisticated health system, the UK has shocking socio-economic and ethnicity-related inequalities:

  • A Black British woman is five times more likely to diein pregnancy than a white British woman
  • Babies born in Bradford are four times more likely to diebefore their first birthday than babies born in Bath
  • Six-week old babies in Wandsworth are four times more likely to be breastfed than babies born in Knowsley
  • By age three there isa 17-month income-related language gap

Evidence shows that confident, informed parenting helps children’s physical, emotional and language development, and that confidence and knowledge is more significant than parent income or background in supporting their child’s development.
