'Getting it Right from the Start' Small Wonders Neonatal Workshop

Best Beginnings has been working with Julie Watson and the Yorkshire and Humber HIEC (Health Innovation & Education Cluster) at the Mother & Infant Research Unit (University of York) to co-develop the Best Beginnings ‘Getting it Right from the Start’ Small Wonders Neonatal Workshop.

At Guys and St Thomas’ Hospital, King’s College Hospital and Liverpool Women’s NHS Trust, Best Beginnings is undertaking an intensive change programme to embed Small Wonders. This work is being evaluated by Coventry University. As part of this, the Best Beginnings ‘Getting it Right from the Start’ Small Wonders Neonatal Workshop is being piloted in the three intervention sites, with a plan to permanently home and disseminate the shared learning from Best Beginnings.

The Workshop has been designed to support the effective embedding of the Small Wonders DVD and Change Programme by building confidence, knowledge and skills for all staff on neonatal units and in maternity around supporting parents to be at the cornerstone of their baby’s care. This drive to enhance family-centred care will, based on the evidence-base, lead to an improvement in health outcomes for babies and the wellbeing of parents.

Preliminary evaluation of the workshop based on participants' self reported knowledge pre and post attending the workshops showed that post workshop scores (on a scale of 1 to 10) were significantly higher (p<0.0001, paired t-test) for all 10 areas of knowledge surveyed (including breast feeding, breast milk expression and kangaroo care).

The development of the Best Beginnings ‘Getting it Right from the Start’ Small Wonders Neonatal Workshop demonstrates partnership working at its best, with active input from Best Beginnings expert and parent stakeholders, learning from Best Beginnings in the making of the Small Wonders DVD and, insights and experience from the Yorkshire and Humber HIEC change methodology. Best Beginnings and the Yorkshire and Humber HIEC are both grateful to Northwick Park for collaborating with us in piloting the first Small Wonders Neonatal Clinical Workshop.

Best Beginnings hopes to roll out the workshop nationally pending future funding.
