Baby Buddy is the free mobile phone app for parents and parents-to-be with personalised content approved by health care professionals that spans from pregnancy through to the first six months after birth. It is an engaging and evidence-based resource designed to complement the care that families receive to help give every child the best beginning.

There is also a web version of Baby Buddy that is designed to give people without a phone access to a selection of the most useful content, although for a fully personalized experience with all of the interative features, we recommend downloading the iOS or Android app.

Who does Baby Buddy aim to help?

The app aims to help all families in the UK particularly young parents and those from disadvantaged backgrounds. The content is tailored to be understood by those with a reading age of 11 and has the option for text to be read aloud to ensure the app can be utilised by everyone. Baby Buddy also provides the option for professionals to use the app to aid them in supporting new and expectant parents.

How does Baby Buddy help?

The app provides useful information through a personal Buddy to improve parents’ confidence, knowledge and skills. The Buddy acts as a virtual friend to support families on the emotional, physical and social journey through pregnancy and becoming a new parent. Alongside daily information about mothers, their pregnancy and their baby in a bite-sized format, the app has fun features to help parents get the most out of their appointments and interactions with health professionals.

Who has supported Baby Buddy?

  • Baby Buddy has received amazing support from the Big Lottery Fund who issued a very generous grant to help develop and launch the app.
  • Contributions were also made from the Tedworth Charitable Trust, the Royal College of Midwives and the Guys and St Thomas’ Charity which went towards developing an initial proto-type of Baby Buddy.
  • The Galvani Foundation and the Burdett Trust have also offered their support by funding the maternal mental health films currently in production, many of which will feature in the app.

This funding has not only paid for technical and content development, but has allowed for pilot and substantive evaluations to be carried out, for new films to be made and for new FAQs to be addressed.

What next for Baby Buddy?

Baby Buddy is continually looking to update content and make changes based on the feedback given by users, hence there are plans to extend the app content to the child's third birthday.
In response to finding a great need for support for fathers during pregnancy and parenthood, there are plans to create an app for dads which has received fantastic initial feedback so we are currently seeking funding in order to proceed with such an exciting project!
