Comic Relief funding for multidisciplinary workshops in Norwich

As part of our Comic Relief funded work, Best Beginnings is working with Health Care Professionals in the East of England to improve the conversation around perinatal mental health and instruct on using our multi-award winning free Baby Buddy app to improve practice in the maternal care pathway.

Baby Buddy Professional Champions

In September, Best Beginnings trained 20 Baby Buddy Professional Champions in Norwich. This included Midwives, HVs, Children’s Centre coordinators, Mental Health specialists and other maternity service professionals working in the Norfolk & Norwich University Hospital catchment area.

C&P workshop Norwich

During this Co-creation & Planning workshop, the Baby Buddy Professional Champions explored the Baby Buddy app (videos amongst other functionalities), and then collaboratively created a plan of when and how these resources can support and reinforce the work of health professionals with the families they work with in Norwich.

The overarching goal is to support the Champions’ capacity, engagement with one another and with the parents they support in order to improve communication, confidence and self-efficacy. This ultimately serves to improve maternity experience and health outcomes.

Perinatal Mental Health module

Our embedding workshops are tailored to the locality in which we are working. In Norfolk, perinatal mental health is a priority with an estimated 360 women having severe PMH needs, and a further 3,000 – 5,000 with mild to moderate needs.

In October our Baby Buddy Professional Champions reconvened for a workshop focused on PMH. The workshop used films from the Out of the Blue film series, in which parents tell of their own experiences going through mental health challenges during parenthood.

“We already have clear processes for addressing a mother's physical concerns, but less so when it comes to mental health concerns

Midwife in Norwich

There was some amazing insight into the existing local systems around maternal mental health, and a clear understanding of how the digital resources of Baby Buddy can support professionals as well as parents with understanding perinatal mental health.
